Complications to Your Vision From Diabetes

Diabetes is a health concern that affects nearly 1 out of every 10 Americans. When our bodies cannot process blood sugar into energy properly, serious health issues can arise when these sugar levels remain high for prolonged periods.

At Total Vision El Cajon, we recommend that our patients with diabetes attend eye exams annually. We personalize our eye exams to your unique needs and offer compassionate treatment for your specific health concerns.

Protect Your Vision

When your blood sugar levels are high, one symptom is blurred vision. Blurred vision can go away after blood sugar levels return to normal. However, damage to the retina may occur when blood sugar levels are high for a prolonged period. Many diabetic eye diseases can arise as a result of retinal damage.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a disease that can lead to serious vision problems. At the back of your eye, there is an inner lining called the retina. When blood sugar levels remain high for an extended period, it can damage your eye’s blood vessels. These damages cause the vessels to break, bulge, and leak fluid into the retina.

The macula is at the very center of the retina. It is a small but essential part of our vision that aids in seeing the objects in front of us in full detail, like our loved ones’ faces and the written word.

When fluid leaks into the retina, it causes the macula to swell, leading to visual distortion. This condition is called diabetic macular edema (DME). DME is a common cause of vision loss in people with diabetic retinopathy.
